Elvas is the Portuguese center of military tourism, as it was used as the first line of defense by the Portuguese to protect themselves from Napoleonic, and Castilian invasions multiple times.

Pick up

Get ready for an exciting and active adventure with our experienced guide. After pick up from your hotel, we will depart from Lisbon and go directly to Elvas, with a quick stop at the fortress of Santa Luzia (10:30).

11:15 a.m.

Elvas

Once in Elvas, we are going to see the ancient aqueduct that used to supply water to its inhabitants. But the main attraction and focus of our interest is the Fortress of Elvas, a marvelous star-shaped fortification that was used for defense purposes.

11:45 a.m.

Lunch + free time

After the fortress of Elvas, we will have some free time. It is the ideal spot to have lunch and buy some local pastries. Here, we’ll not only enjoy the environment but will also taste authentic Portuguese cuisine. To add a final touch to our experience, we will give you some free time, so you can try the local pastrie

1:15 p.m.

The Church of Our Lady of Assumption

Our next place of visit is the Church of Our Lady of Assumption. This Old Cathedral of Elvas is a religious building, located in Republic Square, and is a great example of the Manuelino architecture.

2 p.m.

Fortress of Our Lady of Grace

Finally, it’s time to see the example of military architecture in Portugal – the Fortress of Our Lady of Grace! The fortress of Elvas and the Fortress of Santa Luzia have earned the town multiple prizes in military architecture and have also earned the status of a World Heritage Site, protected by UNESCO.
