Belem Tower in Lisbon: Discover Belem Tower UNESCO Site and Cultural Heritage

One of the most beautiful symbols of Lisbon is the Belém Tower. The majestic structure stands right next to the water, creating an incredibly picturesque view of the historical part of the city - Belem.

The tower is one of the most popular landmarks in Portugal. At the end of the 80s, it was declared a cultural heritage monument, included in the UNESCO lists, and is under its protection. This point is one of the most significant spots for Lisbon city walking tour. The construction of the tower was carried out in 1514-1519 and is associated with the Age of Discovery, in which Portugal and Lisbon itself played one of the leading roles.

Since 1515, the tower has welcomed Lisbon sailors returning to their hometown with Venetian arcades, an abundance of architectural decoration, and a statue of Our Lady of Prosperous Returns, the patroness of Portuguese sailors since the time of Vasco da Gama. It’s worth coming here to admire the amazing architecture, see the collection of ancient cannons in casemates, see unusual sculptures of rhinoceroses, and enjoy the views of the river.

The Belem Tower architecture is unique, as it is massive and at the same time elegant structure, consisting of the observation tower itself and a powerful bastion at its foot, jutting into the natural harbor at the entrance to the city. As you approach the tower on your day trips from Lisbon, whether from the city or along the river, you will gradually discover all its amazing details. The architectural style in which this structure is made is called Manueline, which became widespread exclusively in Portugal, during its heyday as a maritime power. This style includes elements of Gothic, Renaissance, Moorish, and even a little Indian style. Basically, everything that the Portuguese were able to see thanks to their numerous expeditions. A true master, Francisco de Arruda, is the author of this magnificent architecture.

The fortress consists of two parts: a five-story tower with statues of St. Michael and St. Vincent, equipped with a stunning Templar chapel, which is located inside, and a hexagonal bastion with 17 cannons. On the ground floor of the tower (bastion level). While going on Lisbon tours, it is worth exploring the open terrace from which the monarch himself once greeted returning travelers. Here is a statue of the Virgin Mary of Safe Returns, and the perimeter of the terrace is decorated with Moorish turrets reminiscent of exotic headdresses.
