Senhora do Monte Viewpoint in Lisbon: Top Spot for the Scenic Views of the City

One of the must-visit places for a Lisbon city walking tour is the Miradouro da Senhora do Monte observation deck. It may be a challenge to get there on foot, but it’s worth it as the breathtaking views over the city are guaranteed.

The viewpoint is one of the places where the visitors can look from above at the tiled roofs and architecture of the buildings and feel like they’ve traveled 100 years back. The entire old city is spread out in front with a panorama of such popular attractions, as the Sao Jorge Castle, the Statue of Christ, the 25th of April Bridge, the Santa Justa ski lift, and the Carmo Monastery.

The easiest way to come here is on foot from the Intendente metro station. Although the path may seem a little steep, the panorama is worth every step.

Miradouro da Senhora do Monte is one of the most popular spots to enjoy the best Lisbon panoramas and the tranquility, feeling the atmosphere of the old city. The viewpoint, surrounded by beautiful trees and cozy benches, is an easy escape from the crowds and noise of the big city. This is the perfect place for a romantic sunset with your nearest and dearest, or relaxation after exploring the city.

One more famous attraction, located here, is the chapel of Nossa Senhora do Monte. The visitors shouldn’t miss the opportunity to see one of the most beautiful Portugal landmarks, dating back to the times of the Roman Empire, as it can add a final touch to the unforgettable impression of Lisbon. In 1147 a chapel was built in honor of St. Gens, the hermit, who was one of the first bishops of Lisbon. In the same place, he suffered martyrdom, after which he was canonized.

A bit later the Augustinian monks installed the marble chair of St. Gens in the chapel. There is an interesting legend that highly recommends pregnant women to come here. It says that If a woman who is waiting for the baby sits on this chair, she can give birth easily and without complications. Even the wife of King João V of Portugal, Donna Maria Anna of Austria, followed this advice when she was pregnant with the heir to the throne. This tradition is carefully kept to this day
